Hemp as a Carbon Crop: What the UK Still Isn’t Measuring Properly

Where Hemp Could Deliver Real Carbon Impact

If properly measured and integrated, hemp could contribute across several climate-relevant areas:

Products like hempcrete can store carbon in buildings for long periods, reducing embodied emissions.

2. Soil Regeneration Systems

Hemp can improve soil structure and reduce input intensity in rotations, supporting regenerative agriculture goals.

3. Bio-Based Manufacturing

Hemp fibres can replace higher-carbon materials in textiles, packaging, and composites.

4. Circular Carbon Systems

End-of-life hemp products can potentially be reused, recycled, or safely returned to soil systems.

International Context: Where Measurement Is Moving Faster

Some European systems are beginning to integrate hemp more effectively into climate frameworks.

For example:

  • France has a more established industrial hemp sector where fibre and construction applications are increasingly aligned with sustainability policy

  • Switzerland has supported innovation-led environmental material systems that more easily incorporate bio-based construction materials into broader sustainability strategies

These approaches benefit from stronger alignment between agricultural policy, construction standards, and climate accounting systems.

The Core Issue: Science Exists, Systems Lag Behind

The science around hemp’s carbon potential is relatively well understood. What is missing is system-level integration.

Three key disconnects remain:

  • Agricultural data systems do not fully capture hemp’s environmental performance

  • Construction carbon accounting does not consistently credit bio-based materials

  • Carbon markets do not yet reliably value hemp-based sequestration

This creates a situation where hemp is environmentally beneficial, but institutionally invisible.

Until that gap is closed, hemp will remain a promising climate tool that is still waiting to be fully counted.
