CHCX-3 Winter Update 2025

News from the Hub: What We’ve Been Up To

The CHCx3 project partners have had a busy and productive autumn and winter season with lots of exciting activity in fibre crop research and sustainable farming. Here is a roundup of what we have been doing over the past few months.

Cover Crop Open Day – Morley, October 2024

In mid-October, we held a well-attended cover crop open day at our trial site in Morley. Visitors showed great interest in the different components of this year’s cover crop mixtures. The event included an insightful talk from Liz Bowles, CEO of the Farm Carbon Toolkit, who shared valuable views on how cover crops can support sustainable farming and carbon management.

Agri-TechE Week – November 2024

During Agri-TechE Week in early November, CHCx3 hosted an event focused on the question: Can regenerative agriculture get us a step closer to Net Zero? Speakers covered a wide range of topics including soil carbon, fibre crops and waste valorisation. The event generated lively discussions about the future of climate-friendly farming.

Visit to IndiNature – October 2024

At the end of October, the CHCx3 team visited the IndiNature processing factory to see how hemp and flax are turned from retted fibres into sustainable insulation products. The visit provided valuable insight into how our field trials connect to real-world applications in circular economy products.

CropTec Conference – November 2024

In late November, Project Lead Dr Lydia Smith gave a well-received talk at CropTec on the many uses and benefits of industrial hemp. Her presentation highlighted hemp’s potential in sustainable construction, textiles and carbon-smart farming, underlining the crop’s growing importance in UK agriculture.

With winter behind us, the project partners are preparing for a busy spring and summer of field trials, research analysis and further engagement with growers and stakeholders. We look forward to sharing new insights and supporting the expansion of sustainable fibre crops in the UK.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far. Keep an eye out for our upcoming updates and events.
