Unearthing the Health of Our Soils: AHDB’s Soil Health Scorecard

Soil is far more than just dirt beneath our feet. It is a dynamic living system that supports crops, regulates water, stores carbon, nurtures biodiversity, and sustains ecosystems. Recognising this, AHDB has developed the Soil Health Scorecard, a practical tool to help farmers and land managers assess and monitor soil condition on a routine basis. The Scorecard evaluates more than just nutrients, capturing the full spectrum of what makes soil healthy.

What is the Soil Health Scorecard?

The Scorecard combines physical, chemical, and biological indicators to reflect soil structure, fertility, organic matter, and life below ground. Its core indicators include:

  1. Topsoil structure - assessed visually using the VESS method (Visual Evaluation of Soil Structure).

  2. Soil pH - a key chemical variable that affects nutrient availability and biological activity.

  3. Extractable nutrients - including phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.

  4. Soil organic matter - representing carbon, humus, and biological components that support fertility, water retention, and soil life.

  5. Earthworm counts - a simple yet powerful indicator of soil biology and structure.

  6. Optional microbial activity tests - providing deeper insight into microbial biomass and soil life, usually analysed in laboratories.

After collecting field observations and lab results according to the official sampling protocol, the data are entered into the Scorecard. The results are presented as a simple traffic-light rating for each indicator: green for good, amber for review, or red for investigation. This makes it easy for farmers to assess soil health quickly, monitor baseline conditions, and track changes over time.

Why Soil Health Matters

Traditionally, soil testing focused mainly on nutrients to guide fertiliser application. While this remains important, healthy soil is more than its nutrient content. A truly healthy soil must combine chemical fertility, stable structure, sufficient organic matter, and a vibrant biological community. Maintaining this balance ensures long-term productivity, resilience to extreme weather, and environmental sustainability.

The Soil Health Scorecard empowers farmers to take a holistic approach to soil management. By identifying strengths and weaknesses, it encourages interventions such as cover cropping, reduced compaction, organic amendments, and crop rotation, all of which contribute to long-term soil vitality.

With pressures from climate change, intensive farming, and environmental regulations, soil health has never been more critical. The AHDB Soil Health Scorecard offers a clear, practical, and evidence-based framework for understanding and improving soil. By giving farmers the tools to assess and benchmark their soils, it helps safeguard the foundation of agriculture for generations to come.
